You know… given my history and my profession and blah blah blah… I think Kimbo Slice fucking ROCKS. I love Kimbo, I love his story, I love the guys BEHIND Kimbo (they help pay the bills ’round here via Fling.com) and I want nothing but the best for Kimbo. He deserves it. The guys behind Kimbo deserve it. I know South Florida well, and Kimbo deserves anything good coming to him. That is why I am glad MMA fighting has mass appeal - so that homegrown fighters and kick ass guys like Kimbo can make it in this shitty world. I think Kimbo is fucking rad. I love his story, I love the fact that he is an intelligent and family oriented person, and I love how he followed another one of my favorite people (Bob Marley’s) advise and ROSE UP to the occasion. You ROCK Kimbo. You won a great fight (although it seemed to me that it was a ‘WTF’ reality check considering how much time you spent on the floor.. but I know you’ll learn from that and focus on your wrestling), I applaud you and as a big fan of both your style and your personality… BUT overall… my first true introduction to MMA was very disappointing to me. I prefer the strategy and grace of boxing. Those who know me well know that I have been a boxing fan for many, many years. There is a reason for that. MMA, while more complex in structure, seems to lack the grace and finesse of boxing. When you only have your mind and your fists at your disposal (and there are no faggoty excuses like a finger in the eye like in the doctor and ref decided Robbie Lawler vs. Scott Smith fight eventhough both fighers were more than ready to continue), you come of as more graceful to me. To me, boxing is more fun to watch. It holds my attention better.
Tonight the chicks did a FAR better job of rocking the octagon than did anyone else… including Kimbo. I watched Kimbo’s match so intently and with fire in my eyes ONLY because it WAS Kimbo; and only because I know him how I know him. Had it been a Heavyweight MMA championship match appearing on prime time network TV of any other caliber; better or worse than Kimbo; I would have turned to Nova on PBS. I wouldn’t have given a shit. Glad that CBS realizes Kimbo’s appeal, and infinitely more important to me and dear to my heart… I am glad that Kimbo is making good money from the whole thing. I hope he remains a spectacle because he deserves any and all success he receives in life.
That said. With a clear conscious… I say this…. I STILL prefer a kick-ass boxing match to a MMA match any day. I was hoping that MMA would show me different tonight… but the truth is CBS and Elite XC came up short despite my support for Kimbo.
See you in Nassau.
